Thank you for considering me as your photographer. Please read everything below before contacting me with questions or booking. I want you to know what I’m about before we discuss shooting together. Hopefully, it will answer some of your questions and prepare you for a phone consultation. I want to make sure you are comfortable with me and the environment because if you aren’t, we will not get great shots.

Let’s talk about your career and see what we can do to improve your marketing efforts!

Headshot defined on Wikipedia

A headshot is a specific type of portrait (usually a photograph) that realistically demonstrates a person's appearance for branding or casting. Many head shots are promotional pictures of actors, models, authors, just about anyone wanting to bring their best for online engagement through social media sites and the "about us" website page. Headshots could be a portrait of a face or full body with a background that doesn’t take away from the subject.

The headshot is about YOU and your personality. Not the background, your clothes, artistic lighting, trees out of focus or anything else that distracts from seeing you. Most casting today is done online and your headshot must POP in a thumbnail. If your face is competing with artistic backgrounds and dramatic lighting your thumbnail image will appear muddy and undesirable. A full body shot of you may look great in an 8x10, but as a 1" by 1" image on a computer, we won't see you. My job is to help you be seen. This is why I shoot a natural and simple image highlighting you from shoulders to hair. I use a clean white or black background so you pop out of the image. I don’t usually shoot vertical because movies & TV are horizontal. Your headshot should be too. If you prefer to go to a park and have the golden hour sun bouncing off your shoulders and hair, or you want to be in an alley with a brick wall behind you, I am not the photographer you.

Digital Headshot Session

Our digital headshot session is designed to create new images for you to market yourself for whatever your need may be by capturing your individual personality and look. The purpose of this photo is to grab the attention from an onlooker. My goal is to help you get their attention.

Whether you need headshots for acting, personal branding or any other medium we'll make a plan to create these types of images for you. In doing so, I concentrate on using your own personal expression and attributes to creatively pull the very best of you into each frame. Throughout the entire process I am directing and coaching you towards what will become a number of captivating portraits tailored specifically for you.

I like to shoot a minimum of 3 different looks during a session. Shooting a range of looks in this way will allow you to have multiple shots available for different marketing purposes. I don’t put a strict limit on the number of shots I take per look, and generally shoot each look until I feel we’ve got it covered. I like to shoot in a horizontal format, but if you feel you need vertical shots or 3/4 shots during your session just let me know and I'd be happy to frame the images accordingly.

Part of my process is to edit the session with you as we go. You and I will inspect shots after each look to determine its potential use or not. When we are done I’ve usually shot anywhere between 200 and 300 shots during my full session and you'll end up with somewhere between 50-75 final shots that you have approved as potential candidates to use. By shooting and editing in this manner we can adjust the focus of the shots during the session to account for anything that you feel we may have missed. You'll know exactly what you will be working with when you walk out of my studio because we have gone through the entire session together and approved each during this process.

If you end up choosing me as your photographer then you are agreeing that it's your responsibility to convey to me anything that you feel needs improvement over the course of the session. I want nothing more than having you totally satisfied with the outcome and things are for the most part easy to adjust during the session. However, once the session is over then it's your responsibility to work with the images that we decided to keep. I'm a big deleter and want your shoot saturated with amazing shots, so I have no problem deleting shots during the editing process in order to only keep the best of the best.

I do feel that I have an incredible eye, however, I have no control of how others (agent, publicist, spouse, friends, etc.) will react to your session after you leave my studio. If something causes you to doubt the marketability of any part of your session and you would like to add another look or two, I charge a $125 fee for another hour of shooting. Anything that you feel could be improved upon should have been discussed during your session in order to avoid having to come back for the additional hour, so I need to charge for my time for this service. This offer is only available for 15 days from your original session and after that, you are free to update at any time by doing my discounted returning client session! (see pricing below)

Before you leave the studio the approved shots will be made available on your own password protected proofing website. You will be able to give the passcode to friends, family, agents or anyone else who might help you choose the shots you decide to use. The site is a perfect tool for choosing your shots and remains online for a minimum of 1 year from your shoot date. If you are using the site and would like it to remain online longer then just ask and we can discuss keeping it active for you.

I will do photo retouching (cleaning blemishes, brightening eyes, adjusting color and shadows) for 3 images for a full session.  Additional retouching $50 per image.

Once you've chosen the shots you'd like to work with you can place an order for major retouching (if needed) and printing through your online proofing site with the retouching/printing house.

I don't release high-resolution images directly to my clients unless you elect to purchase a full buyout of your entire session for $350.

I really like everyone to bring at least 5 to 10 different options for clothing. For headshots, you’ll really just need to concentrate on tops.  Rule #1: You have to love it!  I don't want to shoot anything that you don't feel comfortable wearing.  If you don’t feel comfortable in it, you won’t shoot well while wearing it.

What colors are best? It's better for me to get a visual of something, so I suggest bringing a wide variety of colors that complement you. Don't be seasonal; everything from t-shirts, tank tops to sweaters and light jackets can work. I love textures and layers, but would generally stay away from crazy patterns or text. The image is about YOU not what you are wearing.

If it's not in the studio we can't shoot it, so if you find yourself questioning whether or not something will work just bring it along. I also suggest having some fun with this, if you feel your wardrobe is missing something then go shopping and we'll keep the tags on it and you can return the items you don't want to keep after the shoot.

Women's makeup

Makeup for the session is highly recommended for all women. The cost is based on what makeup artist you choose to work with. Come camera ready or you may bring them along to do hair and make here. Please be sure to discuss this in advance so we can schedule the extra time.

Please be sure to work with a makeup artist who applies specifically for headshot photography. I prefer to start very naturally to give you a very clean look and will add a touch of makeup in the middle of the shoot if you prefer a darker look as well.

Women's hair

We ask that everyone come in with their hair ready the way you would like to present yourself. We want your hair in your pictures to be as close as possible to the way you look on a good hair day.  You are really in charge here because hair is such a personal thing and I want you to feel like yourself. Feel free to bring whatever styling products you need in order to handle creating your look here or during the shoot.

Make sure you discuss this with me and the makeup artist prior to your session, so we are all on the same page.

It's not required and I usually don't recommend makeup on men, but you can hire a makeup artist if you feel you need grooming on the shoot.  Also, for the guys who grow decent scruff or feel you might want some shots with some facial hair, you can come in with some growth and we'll shoot until we feel we've gotten it covered and then you can shave, so bring your razor, etc.

I've got a couple of pricing options for you to choose from.  You can take a look at my session fee and my returning client discounts below.

My digital headshot session rate is $450 for the shoot. There is a $250 deposit required to book a session, this is non-refundable and goes towards the $450 total. The session lasts up to 2 hours once you’re in front of my camera. If you feel that you need more time we can discuss options.

Clients who would like to come in for a quick hour can do so by booking my power hour session. We power it out in and hour and the cost is $325. If you are on your game we should be able to knock out two looks and photo review. Everything else remains the same as the normal full session.

Once you've shot with me the first time you become eligible to take advantage of my returning client discount.  Should you decide to work with me another time, you will never have to pay full price for headshots again.  All returning clients can take advantage of my power hour headshot session for the discounted rate of $225.00.

I shoot Monday through Friday and we generally begin the sessions around 10am.  I do tweak the times depending upon the schedule each particular day, so I do ask people to be a bit flexible. When I'm shooting women, be aware that the sessions do overlap to allow for makeup.

Make sure you don't have anything else scheduled close to the end of your session in case I feel we need more time with you.

In order to get the session you prefer I suggest you book at least 2 weeks in advance. If you need to get in ASAP then just contact me about with ASAP in the subject line of your email. Or call!

I do try to accommodate everyone and can work with your schedule later in the evening or weekends to try and accommodate.

If for any reason you need to change a scheduled session, I require 72 hours notice, otherwise you forfeit your deposit. However, if we are able to fill your slot with another client within the 72 hour period then we would credit your deposit towards your rescheduled session.

Currently, I am not offering off-site headshots.

A non-refundable deposit of $250.00 is required to book a full session, $150.00 is required for a power hour.  It is due within 48hrs after you've chosen a shoot date and gotten it booked on my schedule. If it is not received in 48hrs the session will be granted to someone else, so get your deposits to us as soon as you can.

I accept cash, checks, and Paypal. The remaining balance is due the day of the session.

All deposit checks can be made payable to: JDHfilms
